  • Rosie Grant. Rosie first became involved in funerals when her dying Mum told Rosie “she wanted and didn’t want certain things. We arranged a fantastic funeral for her. I laid her out, a friend made a coffin, we had her ceremony in a thatched barn followed by a woodland burial. I decided that I’d like to train and help other families say goodbye in creative ways, and trained with Peace Funerals, Sheffield (see separate review)”. She comes over as someone who gets alongside you because that is exactly what she’s there for. A calm and gentle presence, a very good listener. Rose is also a trained psychotherapist. When not burying people Rosie loves the outdoors, the theatre, dancing and pottering in the garden with her cats, Nica and Nellie.

Lisa van der Zanden. Lisa used to work for a large chain funeral company and had has a lot of experience of physical care of people that have died.  Working for a massive organisation didn’t really suit her. She much prefers working in a small company where she often supports families from taking their person in to care from place of death, physical dressing and care, arranging the funeral and being with them on the funeral day.

When not working Lisa is interested in Celtic history and loves making with textiles and walking.

    Specific Gravity

Rosie and Lisa work collaboratively with people, helping them to create a great send-off for their dead person.  They are particulary interested in the co-creating ceremony for non-religious funerals and helping to fully personalise religious ceremonies.

Rosie describes her business as follows:

“We are a small independent ethical female led funeral service. We take time to gain an understanding of you and your family’s values, beliefs and what is important to you. We help you create a funeral that is unique for your person; that celebrates their life and personality as well as acknowledging the sadness that they’ve died.

We are founding members of the Association of Green Funeral Directors and are recognized for our expertise in green funerals and woodland burials. We can also arrange cremations and can offset the carbon emission of a funeral with a donation to charity Treesponsibility. We can arrange religious and non-religious funerals.  Attended and unattended. (also known as direct cremation). Funerals can be in venues other than the crematorium. We’ve held them in cinemas, barns, community halls, pubs and families own homes and gardens. As creative folks ourselves we welcome family and friends making and creating amazing farewells.

At Natural Endings we welcome diversity and feel that we’re inclusive of different communities needs.

We feel that our prices are transparent and ethical.

Rosie and Lisa are available 24 hours a day, every day of the year, to support you with compassion and humanity.”

    What\’s Important?

Getting to know you matters, spending time with you, exploring what you want and how that can be achieved. Can get quite involved in ceremony planning, has a team of good secular celebrants on hand, and can guide you in creating and leading your own. Deep knowledge of natural burial and green issues. Can suggest many alternative venues for the ceremony. “We welcome unusual ideas and suggestions and do our best to make them a reality.”

    What\’s Different?

Creativity is a hallmark. So is empowering you to take ownership of the funeral. Unusually qualified and experienced in consultancy to home funeralists. They take undertaking very seriously and regularly attend continuing professional development events, even creating some themselves.

Natural Endings can be reached either at their beautiful funeral home in Todmorden, or in their office at a branch of Pepperdine Barrett Funeral Directors in Manchester (396 Barton Road, Stretford, Manchester M32 9RW Tel; 0161 969 6690)

    Services

    • Your call will be answered by Rosie or Lisa. Will visit you at home. Yes to same sex undertaker laying out the body and yes to you coming and helping. Experienced in burying on private land. Brilliant range of coffins and transport. Excellent website.

    Remarks

Making it happen and getting it right require failsafe admin and precision-engineered organisational skills. Rosie is a particularly nice and a most engaging person. Underneath the niceness there is real rigour. She gets it right.
